1. Where does the course take place?
Courses take place in the South East Lake District, around Elterwater. Full details will be sent upon receipt of booking and payment.
2. Where is Elterwater?
Elterwater lies at the head of the Langdale valley approximately 3 miles from Ambleside.
3. How can I get to Elterwater?
Although there are bus services to Elterwater, these are infrequent, and car is the best means of transport in
the area. If you are travelling by train to the Lake District, please advise us as we can usually arrange to pick
you up from your accommodation if this is in Ambleside. Full details of the rendez-vous location will be sent
with your joining instructions.
4. What time do courses start and finish?
Courses start at 9.30 a.m. and finish at approximately 4.30 p.m. on the Saturday, and perhaps a little earlier on the Sunday.
5. Does the course include accommodation?
The course does not include accommodation, as there is a huge variety available in the area. The following links should enable you to find something suitable.
6. How many people will be on the course?
Courses are normally limited to 6 persons.
7. How fit do I have to be?
On Beginners courses we will normally be spending the whole day outside in a mountainous environment, and you should feel fit enough to walk for 7 hours carrying a rucksack containing your day’s food and spare clothing. There will be hills to climb and to descend, but please remember that learning Navigation is about using the brain, rather than demonstrating high levels of physical prowess.
The Advanced Courses and 5 day courses will be somewhat more testing as we will be spending time in the bigger mountains of the area, and will have to make bigger climbs and cover larger distances.
8. Is there any classroom work?
Normally the courses will be conducted entirely outside, although on occasion an hour or so may be spent
inside if the weather is particularly bad.
